A Martini Themed Wedding

A martini themed wedding is classy, sophisticated and full of swanky retro fun.

Imagine this... Your guests, with martini's in hand, kicking back in lounge chairs situated around the dance floor, live music playing the likes of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Ella Fitzgerald, a swanky bar in the corner with a dazzling glassware display and you and your significant other sharing your first dance together as husband and wife in the midst of it all.

Sound like fun? Need some ideas for planning your very own martini themed wedding? Read on.

Color Scheme:

The colors for a martini themed wedding are classic - black and white with a splash of red. You could also skip the red completely and add more retro accents of color such as purple, green, blue, orange or pink.

Invitations:

Your wedding invitations give you the perfect opportunity to hint to your guests the theme and color scheme of your wedding. And, with such a swanky event in the works, why keep your guests in the dark? These invitations from InkHearts, which were used as birthday invitations, would also make fantastic wedding invitations. The color scheme and style of the invitations plays in perfectly with our martini theme and color combination. Love them!!

{Image Courtesy of InkHearts}
Bridal Party & Ceremony:

Of course you are going to want your bridal party's attire (and yours) to fit the style of your martini theme wedding. Think cocktail party ~ tuxedos and little black dresses with bouquets of red roses.

Reception:

Now here's where you can really play up the swankiness of your martini themed wedding.

Place Card Holders / Table Names ~ When your guests arrive at your wedding reception and are looking for their table assignment, spice it up a bit and "name" your tables rather than number them. Use names from the 1960's icons, such as Humphrey Bogart, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, Joey Bishop, Ella Fitzgerald or Miles Davis, to name a few.

Table Decorations ~ Sticking with our classic color theme, we love white tablecloths with a black runner though the middle. For the centerpiece, a large martini glass filled with our accent color of red in the form of bouquets of red roses, colored floating candles, rose petals, mystic crystals, candies, fruit and more. You could place martini glasses at each place setting or have them organized in a dramatic display at the martini bar.

{Images courtesy of Wedding Decor Ideas; Brandeis Catering; Mucho Martini Glasses; Pink Cake Box; D&J Party Favors by Design; Wedding Bee & Lounge Appeal}

Lounge ~ For a martini themed wedding what could be more perfect than having lounge chairs placed around the perimeter of the dance floor for your guests to kick back in, sip their martinis and watch those guests brave enough to cut loose on the dance floor? Check out Lounge Appeal for event furniture rental options.

And, in keeping with the lounge atmosphere, lighting should be soft (think candles and dimly lit lights). Make sure though that your candles are not strongly scented. We don't want anyone going home with a headache from strongly scented candles.

Martini Bar ~ Think dramatic by incorporating pyramid displays of martini glasses at your bar, a neon martini bar sign and a showman bartender. You want your martini bar to catch your guest's attention as soon as they enter your reception.

Create a martini drink menu and place them on each table and the bar. Consider naming your martini's after your bridal party or 1960's icons. And, stock your bar with martini accessories such as cocktail shakers, a Hawthorne strainer, ice bucket with tongs, shot glasses, jiggers, cocktail picks, personalized cocktail napkins and garnishes such as gourmet olives, fruit slices and colored flavored sugar.

Need some martini drink recipies and ideas? Check out Martini Recipes website for some fantastic ideas.

Worried about the costs of your martini bar adding up? Place Martini Themed Drink Tickets at each place setting. When your guests have used up their drink tickets, the bar can become a cash bar for them.

The Food:

Hors d'oeuvres served on silver trays of course!! Think olive bar (olives stuffed with yummy treats like jalapeno peppers, garlic, cheese, etc.), cheese tray, fresh fruit, caviar, shrimp, fondue, chocolate fountain with fresh fruits, assorted salted nuts or maybe even bacon wrapped scallops. Whatever you decide on, keep it simple and classy.

The Favors:

Send your guests off in style and with great memories of your event with martini themed wedding favors such as a Stainless Steel Shaker, Marvelous Martini Design Wine Bottle Stopper or maybe even an "Oh, So Cosmopolitan" Reversible Recipe Coaster. With such a classy, sophisticated and swanky wedding, why send your guests home with something other than a martini themed wedding favor?

Look Whooo's Having a Baby! (Owl Themed Baby Shower)

Michelle Meiklejohn

We are absolutely loving this baby shower theme. And, well, whooo wouldn't? There are just so  many options available with this theme. It can be used for a boy, a girl or can be gender neutral. So, if you know someone whooo's having a baby and you are doing the baby shower planning, can we suggest that you keep an owl themed baby shower in mind?

Color Scheme:

Of course, in keeping true to our blogging format, let us present you with a few different color schemes for your owl themed baby shower. We found a ton of different invitations, decorating, favor and baking ideas using the color schemes below and, as usual, with a few tweaks here and there you can easily modify these suggestions to fit your needs.

For Boy:

Invitations: We are just loving these owl themed baby shower invitations that we stumbled upon on http://www.zazzle.com/. They have pages of owl invitations to select from and they come in all different colors, designs and sizes. They are absolutely adorable and many coordinate beautifully with the color schemes we have chosen, party favors, decorations and those cute little owl cupcakes (a little further down in our blog that we will be telling you about).

HOOT OWLS Green Neutral
Baby Shower Invitation

Or, would you rather make your own owl baby shower invitations? All you need to do this is to purchase a few supplies from your local scrapbooking store, set aside some time to create them and you'll be on your way.

What should you purchase to make your own invitations? You'll need some basic supplies such as card stock, stamps and ink or die cuts (leaves, branches and owls), scissors, glue or tape and possibly ribbon to tie a bow at the top of your invitation for that extra special touch. Don't forget to keep your color scheme in mind when shopping for your invitation making supplies.

Here's a great video from MACM on YouTube called A Little Note (Owl). In this segment she creates a little note (owl) in no time at all. They are absolutely adorable and with a few simple color modifications and by adding your baby shower information to the inside of the card you can easily make this "note" into a beautiful owl baby shower invitation.

One more thing, since we all know that owls are associated with reading...why not ask your guests to bring a children's book for the mom-to-be by noting that in your owl baby shower invitations.

Decorations:

Banner - We found the cutest pattern from MOONSTITCHES for a Zakka Style Owl Pennant that would make the most adorable baby shower banner. These little homemade fabric owls hang from a string and have a different letter on each owl. The possibilities with these little guys are endless. You could personalize the letters with the mom-to-be's name, due date, baby's name, it's a boy, it's a girl, etcetera, etcetera. And, by selecting fabrics in your color scheme these would make just an amazing finishing touch to your owl theme baby shower decorations.

Table Decorations - MOONSTITCHES hit it home again with their pattern for a Swarm of Owls. These little owls are delightful and would be absolutely amazing when made in your color scheme and placed in little "swarms" on your event tables around vase filled with tree branches. And, speaking of tree branches, they would also make great decorations for your owl themed baby shower if placed around the room in large, stylish planters. And, why not set some of your owls on the branches for that little extra special touch.

{Images from MOONSTITCHES - Zakka Style Owl Pennant & Swarm of Owls; Diaper Cakes Mall - Forest Night Owl Diaper Cake; Vastu Design Clique - Decorative Tree Branches; Plates and Napkins - Big Dots Brown Beverage Napkins; Hostess with the Mostess - Owl Drink Stir Sticks}

Centerpieces - Baby diaper cakes always make great centerpieces for your baby shower head table or food table. Why? Not only to they help bring your baby shower theme together, they also play double duty by being a great gift for the mom-to-be. A simple seach on Google for "owl diaper cake" gave us a ton of options to select from in every color, design, shape and size you can think of. We love the Forest Night Owl Diaper Cake from Diaper Cakes Mall and it goes beautifully in our collage above.

Tableware - We love the idea of pairing brown and white, pink or blue polka dot tableware with the owl baby shower theme. It's a fun and clever way to bring everything together. And, you can spice it up a bit by using solid table cloths in your color scheme.

What about using mason jars to serve your drinks in topped off with homemade Owl Drink Stir Sticks. We found a DIY video on the Hostess with the Mostess' Blog and LOVE this idea. It's so outdoorsy.

Place Card Holders - We found the cutest homemade Chubby Owl Place Card Holders from My Darling Cupcakes on YouTube. They are so adorable and super easy to make. Plus, she gives you the pattern for them right on her Facebook Page. How cool is that?!?

Now, when you go to purchase your felt and supplies for these little owls, coordinate them with your color scheme and watch your guests rave on and on about these. They will also make great party favors for your guests to bring home after your event.

Food: Aside from the usual baby shower foods...fruit trays, salads, veggie trays, meat trays, etcetera, spice up your owl baby shower with some of these terrific owl treats. Just fantastic ideas. Kudos to these creative folks that came up with them. Click on the links below the photos to be brought to their website for recipes.

Night Owl S'more Treats - Yummy!!! Treat your guests to this delicious snack at your baby shower. And, it only takes 20 minutes to prep and bake. You can't go wrong with this snack and it keeps true to your baby shower theme.

Mini Owl Biscuits Snack Bento #109 - WOW!! Amazing idea!! Fresh fruits paired with biscuits made to look like owls. Love it!!

Owl Sandwich - Yet another cute and adorable snack for your event. They are so cute whooo wouldn't want to eat them.

Beata's Hoot Owl Cutlets - OK, how clever is this? Seriously, they look adorable and they sound yummy!! Just imagine the looks on your guests' faces when they get a load of these. Awesome idea!

Cupcakes -  Cupcake are so much fun!! Whooo doesn't love them? They are so versitile and can be made to fit any theme or event. From elegant and stylish to fun and whimsy, you just can't go wrong with them. So, with a little fondant and your imagination (or a local bakery) look at what you can do. We found these Blue and Pink Owl Cupcake Toppers on Whimsical by Design's blog and fell in love with them. They are just adorable!!

Ideas for Hosting a Home Sparty! (Spa Party)

Sparties are all the rage now. And why shouldn't they be? Who wouldn't want to enjoy some relaxing spa treatments while hanging with the girls and throwing back a few drinks? Feeling inspired to have your own home sparty? Here's some ideas for thought:

What Kind of Spa Party Do you Want to Have? This is the very first question that should be answered before you begin planning your event. Once you have this figured out, everything else should fall right into place. Here are some ideas for your home spa party:
  • Hire a professional to come to your home to give facials, massages, manicures and/or pedicures.
  • Hire a mobile spa company
For the budget conscience, have a do-it-yourself:
  • Mani / pedi party
  • Facials party
  • Makeover party
  • Massage party
  • Hot tub soak

Color Scheme: When we think of the spa we automatically think of relaxation. So, of course you’ll want to choose a relaxing color scheme for your spa party. The most prominent spa colors are seafoam green, aqua blue, dark brown, white and beige.

Dark Brown ~ Gives us a connection to the earth and provides us with a feeling of completeness.

Seafoam Green ~ Reminiscent of the sea, seafoam green leaves us with a cooling and calming effect.

White ~ Considered to be a neutral color, white leaves us with the feeling of fresh beginnings, peace and innocence.

Aqua Blue ~ A calming color that can help release anger and therefore offer emotional and mental balance.

Beige ~ A friendly, non-offensive and safe color.

Invitations: Of course, when deciding what will be the perfect invitations for your event, you’ll want to make sure they are spa related. The great thing about this type of party is that you can easily make your own spa party invitations with card stock and stamps or you can purchase them printed for your event. Either way, the ideas are endless when it comes to invitations.

Here’s a great video we found on YouTube that walks you through creating invitations for a spa party. They used a bathtub stamp on their invitations but you can choose any stamp that fits your needs. So, if you decide you are having a mani / pedi party, you could stamp your cards with a bottle of nail polish, etc. The great thing about creating your own invitation is that with all the scrapbooking stores out there, you are bound to find the perfect supplies and colors to match your event.

When doing our research for printed spa party invitations we stumbled upon the “Spa Day Invitation” from Polka Dot Designs. We love this invitation!! Plus, they have a ton more for spa parties. Check them out. Another great website for spa party invitations is The Invitation Box (http://www.invitationbox.com/spaparty.html).
Spa Day Invitation
Whatever way you decide to do your invitations, remember to keep your party invitees to a small number. The whole point of the spa party is relaxation and with too many people you are defeating the whole point of the party.

Decorations – The most important thing is to set the tone for the spa party ~ treat your home spa like you would a day spa. The first rule here . . .NO cell phones (or at least put them on silent).

Drape your furniture with white or beige sheets and incorporate your color scheme with comfy pillows and different textured fabrics placed on the floor and furniture. Or, simply (or maybe not quite so simply) move all or most of the furniture out of the room and create a flowing, open atmosphere with small intimate seating areas. Create stations in the room for the specific spa activities you have chosen. Try not to mix and match here though. If you are having a mani / pedi / massage party, you probably are not going to want to have those going on in the same room for obvious reasons. So, just plan accordingly.

Set out green plants and fresh flowers (but be careful with how strong the scent is, remember, relaxing atmosphere here, we don’t want anyone going home with a headache). Choose warm, soothing colors. No bright pinks, etcetera, and keep with your color scheme here. It’ll help everything come together.

Light candles (in all shapes and sizes and in your color scheme) and place them throughout the room(s) that has been designated as the spa area(s). Be careful here too. You don’t want to overpower the room with scented candles, although a light scent, such as lavender or eucalyptus would be nice. And / or you can use white Christmas lights throughout the room to create the same soft lighting effect that the candles would create.

Play soothing music in the background (check out your local library for CD’s instead of purchasing new ones or find a station on Pandora to play over the internet). An electronic waterfall would be another great idea for a relaxing background sound effect.

Now, depending on how much money you really want to put into your party, you can supply the robes and slippers for your guests or put it on the invitation for them to bring their own. (Oh, don’t forget, if you are having a pedicure station you will also want to put on the invitation for your guests to bring flip flops and if you are having a hot tub soak they will need to bring their bathing suits.) Towels, washcloths, hair ties, magazines, robes and slippers (if you are supplying them) should be arranged around the room. Make sure that you have enough of these items for each guest (and extras wouldn’t hurt either). If possible, choose towels and washcloths in your color scheme.

Treatments: Each spa treatment should have its own “station.” Remember what we mentioned above, use caution when deciding the location for each treatment. You don’t want someone getting a massage next to someone getting a pedicure, both for privacy and scent related reasons. Who wants to get a massage while smelling nail polish? Not me.

Now, to keep things relaxing and less chaotic, try to keep the number of treatments to no more than three. Create a “spa rotation” by having your guests sign up for each treatment they would like or by dividing them up into groups.

Mani / Pedi ~ Use disposable tools for hygiene reasons or have guests bring their own tools. Other items you may need include:

  • Fingerbowl or a large bowl to soak the nails and finger tips
  • Liquid antibacterial soap (for finger bowl)
  • Orangewood sticks
  • Cotton balls or pads
  • Nail polish remover
  • Base coat
  • Nail polish
  • Top coat
  • Liquid or spray nail dry
  • Hand / foot moisturizers
  • Nail files or emery boards
  • Disposable pumice stones
  • Foot soaker / tub
  • Towels
  • Plastic (disposable) pusher with soft tip for pushing back cuticles
  • Cuticle nipper
  • Cuticle oil
  • Nail brush
  • Chamois buffer
  • Pumice powder or cream
  • Nail clippers
Need help with giving a manicure or pedicure. Click here.

Facials ~ Make sure that you purchase products for sensitive skin. You would hate to have a guest have an allergic reaction to a product you have chosen for your facials. The list below lists some items you may want to consider purchasing for facials.

  • Face masks
  • Cucumber slices for the eyes
  • Spatulas (to dip into jars)
  • Face and body scrubbers
  • Loofahs
  • Cotton balls, pads and swabs
  • Facial moisturizers
  • Bowls and jars
  • Eye mask brushes
  • Facial brush
  • Tweezers
  • Eye mask
  • Sponges
  • Warm water
  • Steamer
  • Face massaging cream
  • Face pack
  • Hair ties
  • Washcloth
  • Towels
  • Face wash
  • Toner
Here is a great video series on doing home facials.

Makeover ~ Items you may need for hair and make-up makeover parties:

  • Shine treatment for hair
  • Cotton balls, pads and swabs
  • Facial moisturizers
  • Beauty supplies
  • Hair styling products (hairspray, gel, etc.)
  • Hair dryer
  • Curling iron / straightener
  • Disposable applicators
  • Washcloths
  • Towels
  • Combs, brushes, etc.
  • Shampoo / condition
  • Facial cleaner
  • Tweezers
  • Hair ties
Here’s a link for How to Have a Makeover Party.

Massage ~ Now, this list is short and sweet. Gotta love that!

  • Massage oils or Solid massage bars
  • And / or, purchase a home massage kit. Click here for an example.
Click here for some great Homemade Spa Party Recipes from SpaIndex.com.

Food: When planning the perfect menu for your spa party keep in mind that you want to keep it light and healthy. Some great examples are bowls of fresh fruit, fresh salads with a variety of gourmet dressings, fresh vegetables with a hummus dip and several types of zesty dips, cheese and cracker trays, shrimp, mini sandwiches such as cucumber sandwiches, veggie wraps, mini muffins, gourmet pizzas, a chocolate fountain with fresh fruit to dip and / or whole wheat pasta dishes. Check out SnackPicks.com for some more ideas.

Drinks: Fresh chilled bottled water, Mimosas, Bellinis, Bloody Mary’s, several varieties of herbal teas, smoothies, gourmet flavored coffees, hot chocolate and fruit punches are some drink ideas for your spa party.

Bellini Meanie Martini
Party Favors: With such a large selection of party favors out there, how do you decide which ones are perfect for your sparty? Well, base your party favor on the theme of your party. For a mani / pedi party consider giving out manicure or pedicure sets, hand lotions or even hand sanitizers. For facial parties try lip balm favors, cosmetic bags or even compact mirror favors. For massage parties try bath salts, tea drink favors, slippers or even bath wraps. For more ideas, check out our spa party theme on our website.

Ideas for an Amazing Safari Baby Shower

The possibilities are endless with a safari baby shower theme and by making just a couple of color adjustments you can make this theme perfect for either a “king” or “queen” of the jungle.

Color Themes: Of course, the main color schemes of a safari baby shower would include browns and greens, the colors abundant in the jungle, but you can easily spruce them up and hint at the gender of the baby at the same time. Add some pinks for a girl and blues for a boy. If the mother-to-be is waiting to find out the child’s gender play up your colors with oranges and yellows.

Invitations: You have so many options when it comes to invitations for a safari baby shower. Create your own with your chosen color schemes by using pictures of trees, leaves and baby safari animals such as monkeys, elephants and giraffes. Tie a ribbon at the top in your accent color for that extra special touch.

Monkey Baby Girl Baby Shower Invitations

"My Sweet Little Monkey" Baby Shower Invitations

Decorations:

Balloons ~ Set out balloon bouquets in your color scheme or mylar balloons of jungle animals such as monkeys, zebras and lions to decorate the room. They can be used as centerpieces on your guest tables, food table or just set about the room to add a bit of color. Add a balloon arch to decorate the head table or to spruce up the entrance to your event. We found a Jungle Balloon arch that we love from Balloons Gift Basket Expressions (see photo below).

Vines ~ Synthetic vines (or vine garland) hung from the ceiling of the room with stuffed animal monkeys and birds, such as Beanie Babies, hanging from them are just adorable. Vines can also be used to decorate your event tables as a swag or can be laid across the middle of the table as part of your centerpiece. We found an inexpensive Vine Garland at Michael’s.

Table Décor ~ We love the idea of using chocolate table cloths and setting the tables with different color plates in your color scheme. You could alternate the plate colors at each place setting or each table could have its own plate color. Or, we found adorable King and Queen of the Jungle tableware that brings the color schemes together perfectly.

Deluxe King of the Jungle Baby Shower Kit

Queen of the Jungle Deluxe Baby Shower Kit

Room ~ Set large stuffed animal jungle animals in the corners of the room. Set up faux jungles with plants or artificial trees to take the effect a little further. Or, use safari animal cardboard cutouts instead of the stuffed animals. Place binoculars and jungle maps on little tables by the faux jungles. Binoculars and jungle maps can also be placed on your tables and used as centerpieces. Play jungle music in the background for an extra special effect.

Centerpieces ~ Plan carefully when you decide what you want to use as your table centerpieces. They can play dual roles. They can be door prizes for your guests, gifts for the mom-to-be, favors, snacks or even part of a game. Set out jungle animal figurines on top of vine garland down the middle of the table. Add some floating orchid candles in your color scheme and small plants in animal shaped pots. These all could be used as door prizes or favors for your guests. You could also set out a safari themed diaper cake on the head table or food table that does double duty as a decoration and baby shower gift. Bananas would also make a great centerpiece decoration and they can also be used as snacks for your guests. Mmm...

Food: Keep in mind that you are going on a safari when planning your menu. Some easy items to serve include tropical fruit kabobs or fruit salad, trail mix with banana chips, tiger shrimp, ants on a log or a lunch meat and cheese platter with the meat, cheese and bread cut into jungle animal shapes with cookie cutters.

For dessert, try cookies in the shape of, you guessed it, jungle animals, Monkey bread, animal crackers (frosted or not), animal cupcakes and of course a jungle animal baby shower cake.

Play up your baby shower accent color with a huge bowl of punch in lime green, blue, pink, yellow or orange. Need help finding a punch recipe, look here.

Baby Shower Games: The ideas are endless when it comes to baby shower games for a safari themed shower. You can almost take any traditional baby shower game that is played and make a few minor tweaks and wha-lah, you have a safari themed game. Here are some examples:

~ Match the baby animal with the animals known name (i.e. elephant / calf). You will want to make sure to put a time limit on this one.

~ Create a word search with jungle animal names

~ Create a word unscramble with, yup, you guessed it, jungle animal names

~ Create a bingo game with a safari theme

~ Create a scavenger hunt. Hind the items you want your guests to find in your centerpiece decorations, in the foliage in your faux jungle, from the vines holding the monkeys and birds, etcetera, etcetera.

~ Generate (yes, I decided to use a word other than create) a list of animals with a blank next to it. Have your guests guess the gestation period of each animal.

~ Have a net toss to see who can capture the most stuffed animals

~ Personalize a safari themed Baby Shower Scratch Off Game

~ Purchase this Jungle Theme Game Pack that includes 17 different games that we found at babyshower-simplicity.com. It includes some of the games we listed above and they took the time to create them for you.

Favors: Favors for your safari baby shower can really tie everything together and send your guests home with a memento that will leave your shower fresh in their minds for some time. With so many options, how do you choose? Let us help.

~ Little boxes of animal crackers would be adorable or maybe put them in safari themed dixie cups as part of your centerpieces on your tables.

~ Choose a favor that plays up your accent color or theme.

~ Select something that is practical and that your guests will get some use of again in the future, like a picture frame favor. What a great way for them to showcase the birth announcement photo you send. They also serve as a reminder of the great time that they had at your safari baby shower.
